12 Famous Celebrities Who Started Their Performing Careers as Cheerleaders




There are many things about the early personal lives of famous celebrities that you may not know. For instance, there are quite a number who made their cheerleading squad in school and starting the road to performing in the limelight as a cheerleader. Here are 12 such celebrities who started out as cheerleaders.

1Paula Abdul

When Paula Abdul was 18, she studied broadcasting in Cal Northridge. She went on to become a Los Angeles Laker girl and within a year was made the head of the choreography. She was soon noticed by Janet Jackson as well as the Jacksons having become popular for her keyboard scene with Tom Hanks in “Big”. Since then Paula has never looked back going on to be a judge on reality shows like American Idol, the X-factor and So You Think You Can Dance. 

2Halle Berry


Halle Berry was a cheerleader at her school in Cleveland, Bedford High. She was also a prom queen and the winner of several beauty pageants like Miss Teen All American in 1985 and first runner-up of Miss USA. Her career in acting won her an Oscar in the best actress category for Monsters Ball making her the first African American woman to do so. 


3Sandra Bullock

Sandra Bullock also started out as a cheerleader in school and soon went on to theater productions in Washington-Lee high school in Virginia. Bullock earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in Drama from East Carolina University in 1987 and went o to work as a cocktail waitress till in 1994 she got a major break in the movie “speed” alongside Keanu Reeves. She has won a golden globe, the Screen Actors Guild Award, Broadcast Film Critics Association Award and the Oscar for her portrayal of Lee Ann Tuohy in the Blind Side. 

4Miley Cyrus

As the daughter of singer Billy ray Cyrus, performing has always been in Miley Cyrus’ blood. She was a cheerleader for the Tennessee Premier Soccer team in Franklin. It was the play Mama Mia that inspired her to pursue acting and landed the role of Disney’s Hannah Montana in 2006. The rest is history. 

5Cameron Diaz

Born into a Cuban family, Cameron Diaz first entered the limelight as a cheerleader at Long Beach Poly High School. She started modeling for Calvin Klein when she was 16 and soon made it big modeling for a number of brands till she debuted alongside Jim Carrey in “the Mask”. Since then Diaz has a number of films to her credit wherein 2013, the Hollywood reporter declared her the highest paid actress over 40. 

6Kirsten Dunst 


Among celebrities who started as cheerleaders, Kirsten Dunst became a Ford model at the age of 3 and appeared in more than a 100 TV commercials. When she was 10 she appeared alongside Brad Pitt and Tom Cruise in Interview with the Vampire going on to act in movies like Jumanji and also ER where she was taught driving by George Clooney. During her child career, she was also a cheerleader for Laurel Hall School and Notre Dame High School. 


7Fergie

Fergie was a straight A student and a Spelling Bee champion. She was a cheerleader at Glen .A. Wilson High School and studied dance after leaving. Her early showbiz days saw her doing voiceovers and acting stints for various cartoon and TV shows. Although her first band Wild Orchid started in 1990 fizzled out, Fergie hit it big with the Black Eyed Peas in 2003 when Will.I.Am invited her to try for a song “Shut Up”. She soon became the groups lead singer finding success with the group and also on solo gigs.
